Newbie and Link Plus - Ver14

Hi Go easy on me please being a new member :) I am new to this forum and also the Link ECU's (being a previous unsatisfied Power FC user) I am hoping to get something a little more sophisticated and up to date than the power fc and hopefully something easier to use. I have been looking on the fourm for a while and have found some usefull informaion and must say like minded people willing to help out. Just what a fourm should be. I have very little knowledge on electrics and tuning but willing to learn and help where I can. To cut a long story short I have a Nissan Skyline - 1995 R33 GTR. 1000cc injectors single GT35R turbo and all the other supporting mods. I used to run the Power FC L-Jetro and now would like to get rid of the AFM's my power FC won't do this and to be honest I am not that impressed with it. I have been offerd a Link Plus - Ver 14 with GTR harness and it say's a 3 bar map sensor. The ECU is coming out of another R33 GTR with a similar setup to mine so hopefully not too much mapping required. I do have EGT and Wideband in the car. Is it worth investing in the Link Plus (G1) I am being offered or am i better off just getting the G3? I am not interested in anti lag, launch control etc.. I just want a good reliable ECU. I would like the option of controlling boost through the ECU if possible. I currently have a mechanical boost controller that I am happy with but would like the option of running high and low boost providing it will hold boost as well. Any help greatly appreciated before I either waste my money or loose the option of buying a good ECU. Cheers Kev

Dont do it buy the G3 and forget the G1 infact burn it to save anyone else the headache as well

You will not be disapointed with the G3 sequential will give you nice control of those injectors especially if you play with injector timing  also the boost control with the G3 is easy to setup and can do dual maps  boost by gear etc

Hi Dave Thanks for the information. Do you think I need the Link or Link + for the Skyline. I want to run the map sensor, air temp and boost control and not really thinking of anything else otehr than maybe water injection but thats debatable. I will be running around 2bar of boost and have 1000cc injectors I would like to use the factory knock sensors to retard ignition if possible and I aslo have a Wideband meter if that can be used to help self tune the ECu? Any help appreciated Kev

Yeah, I agreee with dave.   Sounds like you have gone to enough trouble with your engine to justify fitting a high spec ECU.  The LinkPlus G will do everything you have mentioned.  It can also be purchased with a plug-in adapter for your car.  The old V14 ECU was good 6 years ago, but not a touch on the G3 and probably not enough better than the power FC to justify the change.  It is worth the extra for the G3 which I think will impress you...

Cheers Ashley Yes, I am pretty sure the LinkPlus G3 is what i need. What would I need as a kit to get me going if I want to get rid of the MAP sensors LinkPlus G3 Plug in adaptor for R33 GTR 2.5 or 5 bar map sensor - I want to run 2 - 2.5 bar Temperature sensor Boost control solenoid Software / Cable Would I need anything else?. Will the G3 pickup and use my standard knock sensors for knock retard? Is there anything clever i can do with my Wideband, can I connect it to the G3 do you have a auto tune function? Have heard it mentioned before. Sorry for all the questions. Also where does the MAP sensor need to be fitted? on a Apexi Power FC D-Jetro the 2 MAP sensors needed to be fitted in the spacer between the throttle bodies and cylinder head. Does the G3 requre the same location i.e after the throttle bodies. Where is teh best place to fit the temperature sensor? Thanks in advance :) Kev

OK, you want to get rid of the "MAF" or AFM, not "MAP" just to be clear, or maybe that was a typo...  Anyways, you will need all the parts you described, except IAT sensor, software and cable.  Software is free and cable is a standard USB cable as found on your printer (or for a few bukcs at the warehouse).  The GTR should have a factory IAT sensor.

MAP sensors are rated in absolute pressure.  A 2.5 bar sensor allows 1.5 bar (22 psi) boost.  A five bar sensor allows more than you will ever run into your engine.  Choose the lowest size sensor you can get away with.  You will loose resolution if you use a 5 bar sensor for only 20 psi boost etc...

There will be only one MAP sensor.  It will need to be plumbed after the throttle plates.  You MUST use the factory balance bar to achieve a good stable vacuum signal.  MAP sensor can be wired to old AFM wiring to save running wires into the car.  Note that you will be using 4D fuel mapping that is a combination of MAP and TPS.  A base config for the ECU is available that will goet you going on 4D tuning.

You can use you wideband to do cruise/idle closed loop tuing.  It can be wired to the ECU for AFR display and logging.  It will need a 0-5V output for display and logging and need to be calibrated from 5-0V for CLL.

There should be a factory temp sensor in the manifold, but the best place is to fit it into the plenum chamber near its intake.

Hi Ashley Ok, getting there slowly yes got Maf and Map mixed up a bit So I would need the 5 bar sensor to run 21 - 28 psi. I need to put the sensor in beteen the throttle body and head so into the spacer, thats ok. Can I use the Link boost control solenoid? Will this just plugin in place of the standard solenoid. Is there anything i can read up on which tells me how to configure adn use the features of teh LinkPlus G3 Thanks for all teh replies, i did say i was a bti green when it comes to all of this. Cheers Kev

Hi Kev you will need to replace the factory air temp sensor as they are to slow to use for correct tuning

I sell one that will fit easier than the ones supplied by link the one i use has a 14 by 1.5 thread on it so you will need to drill and tap out the factory sensor mounting  the sensor supplied by link will be an ass to fit as it is 3/8 npt and will be bigger than the boss on the manifold will allow

Dave is right about the air temp sensor fitting.  His and our sensors will both work, just in this case his would be easier to fit...  The boost solenoid will not directly plug in, but there is just two wires to join and plumbing is pretty easy.  You can download and read the wiring and installation manual.  that will help with any other bits you are planning on fitting.  Download the latest PCLink and go through the help.  All information on tuning functions is contained in there.  If you open the LinkPlus G3 GTR base map you will be able to have a look through and press F1 for help on anything you dont understand.
