Guest |252|
This thread will showcase the progress for the build of our 2010 car. To get an understanding of what it is all about, read the next little bit (or skip to the pictures). Feel free to ask any questions. Formula SAE is an internationally acclaimed engineering student competition that allows students to design and fabricate a small, high performance racecar. The competition is held under the premise that the students work as design engineers for a manufacturing firm that wishes to mass-produce a weekend autocross racer. The students are challenged to use their knowledge and creativity to build a high performance and marketable car within the restrictions specified by Formula SAE. Each year, over 80 teams from around the world gather to share a wealth of knowledge and join in some friendly competition. The vehicles are judged on the design, aesthetics, cost analysis, performance and marketability of the cars. The final product must not only have excellent performance characteristics but must also be visually appealing and economical to promote sales to the non-professional racer. The car is designed and built entirely by engineering students. If you want to see pictures of our previous cars, check out http://www.ualberta.ca/~formula/ Click on the pictures for high def. Brand new cabinets we got this year. Piecing together our chassis tubes and suspension. Chassis is tacked together and moves for the first time. Dyno setup using one of our old engines. Chassis is back from welding. Finding the center of gravity on our old car by seeing what angle it tips at. Dyno setup. Machining some pieces for the exhaust. Upright tacked together. Exhaust built and welded. Our giant radiator. Overheating won't be an issue this year! Steering. Front suspension. Differential. Takes 8 guys to align the rear suspension up perfectly. All the mounts on the chassis are complete. Half scale model of the 2009 car used for wind tunnel testing. Barbequing in the office! New tires!! One kevlar fibre driveshaft made and ready to be cut to length. Chassis and suspension back from powder coating and looking awesome. Both halves of the mold for the nosecone. Lineup of molds ready for the carbon fibre. Gastank.

Guest |252|
Yes. I am in the car being tipped, the group photo of our chassis, and the dyno setup pic. Here's a few pictures from this weekend. There is going to be some huge progress in the next couple weeks as the whole car will hopefully come together and be finished by our goal of May 1st. Exhaust back from ceramic coating and is very shiny. Carbon fibre layed in the seat mold and vacuum bagged.
Guest |252|
It has been a while, and alot of things have happened. More pictures, with results and videos to follow in the next post. Fabrication continued. Wiring begins! And we finally get back on the dyno, after it underwent repairs and 3 months of use by students for a combustions class lab. Suspension setup. Completed intake. Wiring about half done. Rear wiring harness complete. Body is made and test fitted before trimming. Completed rear end. Front is near completed. Final assembly and just about to test it for the first time! I am finishing up the brake light. High power LED's leave spots in your eyes! The break-in for the car was a complete success! Our car at our unveiling, with me all dressed up. Showing our car in action at the track during unveiling. Too bad it was near freezing outside with rain. Rain tires on! Two weeks later, the 2010 and 2009 cars get packed up in our trailer for our trip to Fontana, California to visit the Autoclub Speedway for the Formula SAE West competition. The four of us driving the truck and trailer arrived at our hotel after 39.5 hours of driving. The rest of the team gets the luxury of flying down. A detour in California to see the giant Redwood trees. An other detour has us stopping at Infineon Raceway. The security guard waved us right in, we must have looked like we belonged! The first morning of competition, beginning with all the teams getting in line at the entrance to the Autoclub Speedway. A good chance to talk to the other teams, waiting to see what they have brought in their trailers! Our paddock setup for the 4 day competition. Tech inspection - Scrutineering Tilt table at 60 degrees, corresponding to 1.7 G's lateral acceleration to make sure the car will not roll over. The dynamic events begin! Our driver sneaks up behind the team that won last year and this year! Exciting to pass the winners due to them having fuel problems, slowing them down. Our team watching the endurance race from behind the fence. Our good performance lands us a spot in the post-race inspection bay to make sure we didn't cheat. After the inspection, straight to the dyno provided by one of the event sponsors. The team anxiously waits for the final results after a solid performance all around during the competition. More than excited for finishing 4th Overall and 1st in the Cost event. Two trophies and the best finish ever by our club! The team and car!
