Ghostek
Hi all I came across strange issue and I was wondering if someone could help Car Nissan Pulsar gtir with S15 plug in. I've put separated coils on it. My problems is when setting base ignition timing my timing marks are not stable/don't want to stay in one place. I followed procedure locked at 15 10 0 degree and adjusted offset (even tried adding 180) raised revs up and down etc. I can see marks for a few sec and then they "move" anticlockwise and disappear! Car Idles fine and when ignition is locked and I'm changing offset revs and engine note are changing too. I've tried 2 different timing lights I've got ht lead between coil and plug and no difference! Oh and my crank pulley is fixed. Thanks Mike
cj
if it idles ok then your spark must be firing at somehwere between about -10 and +40 deg and must be somewhat stable or it simply wouldnt idle. When you ran the timing procedure I assume the engine was off? can you try re-running it with the engine at idle? If you've already got it running you arent likely to do any damage by running the timing calibtration as well. Your timing light doesnt have an advance dial on it that is getting bumped? this should be set at 0 if it has one.
Ghostek
I'll recheck it again with engine not running and yea timing light is on 0... Even if you change degree on strobe nothing changes
Ducie54
Do a trigger scope at idle. Also which coils are you using?
Ghostek
I'm using vag red coils
Typ17 16vg60
Hello, I got a similar problem by beginning to tune, I set my idle ignition, main ignition and control ignition angle to the same value (15°) and than it works by me fine! Greetings
Ghostek
Yeah this what confuses me slightly. I've set base ignition to 20 and idle timing to 20 as well (factory settings for Pulsar) and adjusted offset till it riches 900 rpm on idle... but can't see marks at all. I'll check it again with engine not running and then scope triggers like Ducie said.
Typ17 16vg60
I don't know this engine, do you have a electric throttle? When you don't have one, then you must have a screw to set the idle with more bypass air

I just can't set base ignition timing because my timing marks are for lack of better word running away. They're there for a second and then just drift anticlockwise
Ducie54
Too lock the timing you need to hit enter. If you press F12 and in the run time tab the ignition value should stay at the locked figure when rpm is increase. I personally would have ignition timing at 15 deg at idle as it allows room for idle ignition movement. Start with the offset at -107 mine was around there on my old gtir. The gtir is known for the balancer ring to slip on the rubber so double check tdc marks line up when pistion is up. Once the offset is adjusted so the locked number matches the balancer timing then adjust the iscv value to increase or decrease the idle rpm. That's exactly what I've done mine sit at around -133 but i kept timing at 20 deg I'll recheck crank pulley and try to take a video of it and try to send you here or on Motorsport forum mate
Ghostek
Anyway I'm taking a weekend off I'll tackle it again on Monday I'll let you guys know what's going on but something tells me that Ducie is right and I might have knackered crank pulley after all,,
Ken Dunkley
Hi - I had a similar problem with trying to set the base timing on my engine when initially setting it up . Timing would not hold and advance uncontrolled when reving the engine - Turned out to be " spark edge " was set wrong in my case . I had it set to " falling " and needed "rising " . Not saying yours needs to be rising but you could swap what you have entered and try it .
