When I worked at Lotus Engineering we ran Saab GM Ecotechs on engine testbed with Ionisation detonation detection. When the engines started to burn a bit of oil they were pulling quite a bit of spark out when there was no detonation on the scopes. The calibration engineer believed it was upsetting the Ion system, as Adam points out, ok when everything new, fresh and running sweet but perhaps concerns with sensitivity.
