Gear shift control

In my experience using gear barrel position to trigger a shift doesnt give a great shift - but the ecu does allow it if you want to try.  The problem is the barrel stops rotating before the ideal start shift point is reached (ie you need to start the cut before the shift forks have any preload.)

I'd like to try it,  the guys I got the box from use the gear barrel position to trigger it and looks ok in their videos,  I've asked if they would share their gear control settings with me so see what they come back with. 

I think they are only using g4+ though so the dog unload will be extra

That is the settings from a mates g4+ gear control but of course he doesn't have the dog unload so those are just generic.  

I find it strange there is cut for down shifts but is this maybe to help as he doesn't rev match?

The gear barrel is very accurate and I have the +/- tolerance at .03V so start shift threshold could be as low as .04v I guess

Firstly, are you sure those barrel voltages correct?  There is about 0.7V difference between most gears except 4th-5th only has a 0.5v change? It's pretty odd to have different barrel rotation angles like that in my experience?

A starting point attached.  Only driven upshift is possible for you without an ECU controlled blip system so I have zeroed out all the other shifts so they dont interfere.  Downshifts will require the clutch and preferably a manual blip when you can.

The start shift voltage threshold you want as big as you can get away with.  When it is too big it will sometimes be very difficult to pull out of gear or not shift at all.  So this needs trial and error - around 0.1V is what I have seen on a couple of other cars, but I havent tuned one of the ford based quaifes.  Start small and increase until it starts getting difficult then back it off a bit from there.  

The "next gear reached voltage margin" is also something that needs to be tuned by trial and error.  Generally you can get away with the same voltage setting for all gears so adjust the whole table at once to start with.  If it feels like you cut is too long and could be ramped out earlier then increase this voltage.  When you have it too large it will sometimes jump back out of gear when power is brought back in at the end of the shift.

Yes that is a valid choice.  I have only tried a micro switch lever once about 15years ago on a drag car, back then it was pretty hard to find strain gauge knobs.  It didnt work great from memory but I suspect probably better than gear barrel start. 

Did you try gear barrel start? Do you have a log?
