Guilty Garage Posted July 27, 2024 Report Posted July 27, 2024 Been chasing my tail with some mechanicals getting to this point, but I'm almost there. Just wanted to pick some brains to see if there is something I'm overlooking. The Facts -J35A4 on G4X. Brand new build. Finally firing on all 6. Firing order is confirmed good. -Crank and cam signals look good. It took 75° of offset for the crank timing to line up 10BTDC and the proper mark. (Does that seam right? (I'm not confusing TDC and 10BTDC marks and the timing gun is not offset) -Its now DBW which all seems functional -This is RWD converted in a Miata with the manifold flipped backwards, important for the next note. -At this "correct" crank ignition timing, Its got a high idle at 2000 RPM. I have pretty much got the TB down to 0.5% with no change in idle so I'm banking on a massive vacuum leak due to something with the manifold flip. -I've got AFRs to stoich and verified no other misfires causing a skewed stoich reading -I can bring the idle down with pulling some offset out, but seems counter intuitive due to the next concern. -Other than the high idle, it seems pretty smooth, even drivable a block or so. The Concerns -Exhaust is essentially glowing after a minute or so of idle. The Theories. -perfectly normal for idling at 2k with 5-10 of timing advance. Fix the leak and it will fix the concern. -"75°" of offset is wrong even though crank say its right??? Is it even possible for it to run this way if it was really 360out and off would be "-285", I couldn't imagine so. -Just thought of this one. There is 2 cam sensors on the same cam that are 180 out. One of them is not needed. What if I'm using the 180 out one and offset would theoretically be (-105)? No... that's what the offset would end up fixing anyway. Its all counter intuitive to me. High idle tells me too much timing. Glowing exhaust tells me too retarded. IDK, i've inhaled fumes and talking to myself here and a fresh brain would be cool till I get back on it in the morning. My big brain just thought of the most likely option. I've never had the motor apart, but i bet you the crank jumped some teeth. Easily noticable on an established calibration, but patching it with offset but still having the relative to the cams timing off would definitely cause some exhaust valve to open early. Quote
Adamw Posted July 28, 2024 Report Posted July 28, 2024 What trigger mode are you using? Can you give us a trigger scope. Quote
Guilty Garage Posted July 28, 2024 Author Report Posted July 28, 2024 It was 100% the vacuum leak. With the intake manifold flipped there was a port on the egr that was letting air in that expected to be naturally plugged. everything is running as smooth as butter. please delete my ramblings. Quote
