Matthew Oliver
Hi All Im helping a mate with his 86 RX7 Savanna and Im a bit stumped with the way he has set up his coils, Ive got some theories on whats going on but Im not 100% sure Setup is as follows: -4x Bosch HEC-715 coils and a 3 channel Link Ignitor The Leadings are running off 1 channel each and the trailings are running off a single channel in parallel (pretty much wasted spark setup). The leadings are sparking fine and triggering the timing light as expected. The two trailings we were having problems getting spark with, we would always get a weak spark and it wouldnt trigger the timing light we are using. We changed to some hotter plugs and weve now got spark (we beleive from just listening to it when the hotter plugs are fitted and it runs alot better) but still not enough to trigger the timing light. When we pull the lead away from the plug a bit and let it arc across we get the timing light going. My thoughts on this are to get a coil that has 2 posts and a single winding or run 2x 6 volt coils in series, but trying to source either of these is a bit of a nightmare so we would like to utilize what we currently have. Can someone provide some insight to whats going on here?
Matthew Oliver
Just realised that Ive got my terminology around the wrong way and Ive mixed up trailing and leading and I cant figure out how to edit my post. This is my first time dealing with one of these engines and who ever thought that having triangles inside ovals was a good idea is beyond me still trying to get my head around it all
Simon
What is happening is that the two coils being run off the single channel are only getting at best 3 amps of current. Causing a very week spark. Only solutions are another igniter so each coil has its own igniter channel or to go to a dual post coil as you mentioned. Matthew Oliver
This is what I suspected. So going on what youve said would I be able to get a single channel ignitor and run the trigger in parallel with the existing one and then take the output from each ignitor to thier individual coils? As far as im aware the ECU only supports 3 ignition channels. It is a V5 ECU
Simon
Yep you got it. The input to the igniters can be paralleled up. This will give full current to all coils but still fire the two leading coils together.
