lap timer trigger

I want to use the lap timer function on my G4, from what I can see I need a transponder that has an output that I use to trigger a digital input? The only transponder and beacon I could find with an output was huge $$, anyone know of anything cheap or am I better buying a race dash and use gps? Cheers
