Laminar Posted December 11, 2023 Report Share Posted December 11, 2023 The E36 consumption meter just gets a PWM signal roughly equivalent to injector duty cycle from the ECU. The gauge cluster itself takes that PWM signal, which is proportional to total fuel flow, and compares it to speed which it knows because it's the speedometer, then calculates mpg.
