  1. Does the manifold pressure drop badly when this happens. Can you send me a log.

I had a Toyota Landcrusier years ago that would do the same thing. It took me a long time to find the problem, as I was looking for something complicated as the cause. It turned out to be the 90 deg hose on the air inlet of the turbocharger sucking flat.

  2. Will you be bringing out an update for us to download onto the ecu or will it only be available from our tuner?

At first the dealers will do some testing before the public release.

I have just checked to see where we are with this, and some other features that are being finished off first. I will try to get a more accurate date later.

  3. Marcel,

Rather then trying to solve problems you had with other make ECU, before you have tuned the Vipec on your engine, is a bit of a waste of time. The Vipec is not the same as your old ECU.

The lack of a separate idle ignition table is more then compensated for, in most cases as the idle value control works correctly, unlike many other make ECU. You can make the main ignition table have a idle ramp, but so far I have never needed to do this. On engines with very big cams, I have had to open the throttle a little more as the stock idle valve did not have enough flow to catch the engine when coming back to idle or as AC or other loads were applied.

I would tune using the method mentioned previously and if you find that overlay tables have to be used, then and only then use them.

  4. Marcel,

Why do you want overlay tables. If you plan to map using TPS as the Y axis for the fuel table, then set the target AF table as enabled and Fuel Equation as Load=BAP. You then tune based on TPS and the ECU will look after the correction for manifold pressure.

  5. AIM have just contaced me and said the dash is working with the Vipec and adaptor. Below is all the information needed to make it work.

    Connection:

Make sure to connect everything to the right place. I mean that the cable coming from the adaptor has to be connected to the Vipec ECU through the “CAN†labeled connector, the five single wires go directly to the MXL, to the power supply and to GND also to make the adaptor be powered on.

Following connections are also described by the pictures attached

MXL RS232TX Blue ----- ADAPTOR Yellow RXD signal to AIM dash

MXL RS232RX White ----- ADAPTOR Blue TXD signal to AIM dash

MXL +12V Red ----- ADAPTOR Red +12V both connected to IGNITION

MXL GND Black ----- ADAPTOR Black GND both connected to battery/chassis GND

ADAPTOR Green SignalGND could be connected to the battery/chassis GND

Remeber to Power on the ECU, the MXL and the Adapter to obtain communication among them.

    MXL Configuration

Make sure to save a copy of your existing ECUdriver.bin and Configs_20800AIM.mdb files, then paste the two files I’ve attached once again (link_G4_3bis_Vers.rar) into the same folder (e.g. C:\Program Files\AIM\DATABASE).

After this create a new configuration in Race Studio 2 choosing ECU Manufacturer and ECU Model G4 Vipec (Beta ver), transmit the configuration to your MXL.

  6. On my dyno I use the Autronic B model with UEGO sensor. This outputs a 0 to 1 or 0 to 5 volt signal. This signal is based on Lambda. The Vipec ECU takes this in and displays air fuel ratio. I can change the display on the B model to air fuel ratio LPG, Diesel, Petrol, Lambda or Alcohol. This has no effect on the signal going to the Vipec. This is how all other meters work.

Yes 1.0 lambda is 14.7:1 petrol.

  7. There is no option to change to imperial. Metric is easy to learn. The only one I found that needs some adjustment is temperature. I am old enough to have being around when Imperial was used in Australia and had to make the change. I have written two programs to help people convert all the values used in the software to metric, and air fuel ratio to lambda.

If tuning methanol setup the target AF table with AF values using the AFcalc program to convert your lambda values into air fuel ratio petrol..not alcohol. You then can use Quicktune or Quicktrim to tune the engine.

  8. The dealers have been testing version 4.3.3 over the last few weeks. Later next week I hope to make it available to everyone. We had a problem where some Nissan engines would not start after the firmware update. Because of this, I have decided that software and firmware will not be released until all features are fully tested.

We have found a few other small problems that will be fixed. The release version may be 4.3.4.

  9. The Motec ADL (dash) can now be used with the Vipec. The Vipec Motec Adaptor is required. This converts the Vipec protocol to the Motec CAN bus protocol. Motec have templates available for the Vipec.

Insight Motorsport has just set up of these, and it works without problems, and all the Vipec data stream items are used. The Motec dash has very powerful data logging capabilities and excellent diagnostic software. This dash would be the best when dollars is not a limiting factor.

  10. The CAN cables are in stock. There are two types. One is 500mm long and has bare wires on one end. The other is an extension cable which is the same length as the USB cable and has male socket on the other end. You would cut this off to get to the wires.

  11. All V88 have knock circuity inbuilt. The V44 and plug in require an external amplifier.

Make sure you have knock control enabled and "On Knk I/P" is selected. Without the knock enabled, from memory you do get a value of 65535 showing.

  12. May be a dumb question. But what is rotary idle? Just idle so it sound like a rotary engine or does it do anything?

Rotary idle is not to make the engine sound like a rotary. Rotary idle is often also called cyclic idle or cooldown. Cooldown actually describes what it does. When a rally car has been using antilag the turbocharger turbine wheel is very hot. When the rally car gets to the end of a stage and is back at idle, the ECU cuts fuel to the injectors in a pattern. This causes a lot of air to be pumped into the exhaust which cools down the turbine wheel. It also allows the idle speed to be lower with the large fixed throttle opening.
