Enough I/O? CAN I/O expander?

Hello everyone,

I’m evaluating an ECU for my JDM Evo 9. The Vi-Pec Plug-in Ecu for the Evo 9 seems the way to go, but I’m not sure, if it has enough additional ECU inputs for my needs. BTW, I don't have A/C and don't use the I/C Spray.

I want to connect the following sensors/switches to my ECU:

- Vi-Pec Digital Knock Amplifier Kit (KnockBlock)

- AFR

- EGT

- FuelP

- OilP

- Antilag Switch

- Launch Control Clutch Switch

- High/Low Boost Switch (or variable boost with a potentiometer)

- Dual Fuel/Ignition Map Switch

- Anti-Theft Switch

- when it's available: Traction Control

- and in the future if I go with a sequential gearbox an input for flatshifting/ignition cut

I know there is an "Expansion Connector", but looking in the manual it seems that only one analog input (An Volt 6) is usable. The others show as N/C.

I started to assign the unused I/O like this:

Digital Knock Amplifier -> Aux - Inj 5 (A/C Relay) and DI 4 (A/C Request)

Oil P -> An Volt 2 (MAF Signal)

EGT -> An Temp 3 (MAF IAT)

AFR -> An Volt 6 (Expansion Connector)

So, the only DI which is free now is DI 2 (I/C Auto Switch). But how can I connect all the other inputs? Is there some CAN-based I/O expander available, like the Haltech I/O Expander 12 (or could the Haltech expander be used)?

Thanks for your help,

Sam

Simon, thanks for your reply!

Didn't know that all VX top board i/o is used for the standard Evo 9 functions...

So, if I want all the options working like I mentioned in the first post, the only way to go is the V88?

Is there a company who offers a PnP-Adapter harness to hook up the V88 to an Evo 9 GT?

I dont know about a pnp adapter-harness, but I believe it should be an easy task to build your own. Buy an ecu connector and build it yourself. Maybe your local dealer can source you one?

I have done this with my own Evo 2 running V88 and alot of other cars like Ford Sierra/Escort Cosworth, Audis etc. Works very well.

pnp board does not have enough digital inputs for switching, you could use some analog as switc but can't do everything, so v88 is the choice+ it offers knock control and few othe things, like launch and traction using the 2 cluctch pedal switches, cooling fans controll..... i use AEM- ECU Patch/Extension Harness 30-2990 for evo 9 and 8 with 3 plug ecu, takes about 1h30min to make a perfect harness, plus you retain the posibillity to use oem ecu if emission test is needed......

this ecu is perfect match for evo 9, what you need depending on model/market, is to switch to a JDM 3 bar sensor(some countries have only 1bar for egr controll),and install iat sensor(if you don't have it)......if you'r is jdm you should have both....you can even controll your sas for air injection...ic spray....this is whi you need lot's of digital imputs
