E36 Ignition Test - Not Firing any of the coils

I've attached the map, I've confirmed 12v, Gnd, and coil trigger to ecu pin location.

I've temporary added a new ground directly to engine from the coil to eliminate "potential bad ground"

I've run the test with all 6 coils and none fire, so highly unlikely to be the coils themselves.

appreciate any help you can give, this is one of the PnP BMW boxes with the internal igniter.

Thanks for the help

Does it have the stock M50 coils?  Did it spark on the stock ECU or unknown/new build?

The first suggestion I have is to update the firmware as your map shows it has a very early FW, I dont remember back to 6.16 well enough to know for sure if the ignition test function was working back then, but pretty sure it was.

Hey guys, I’m in the same boat, there’s not much info on the g4x m50 stuff yet, I had my car booked in for dyno, I drove there on the stock ecu, changed my injectors, plugged in my new Link g4x, and my tuner said he’s got no response from the cam sensor or ignition, my question is... Is everything built in to literally plug and play?

Or do we need to wire something inbetween the ecu and the coils like I’ve previously read?

(excuse my lack of tech terms, I do engine builds over wiring and ecuz)

cheers in advance!

No my setup is early 90z, it’s non vanos, and yep m50b25, I have just bought new crank and cam sensors to try rectify the problem, hopefully I get some feedback through pc link, my tuner just said to ask if there’s any other ad ons as he’s still getting familiar with Link products in different cars ect.. I’ll keep you in the loop either way, cheers again.

Oh... right.. sounds like I have a problem. I actually bought it from a dealer on eBay, not from your website, I was told it was the one I needed..

what do you recommend I do?

is it possible to change the pin out to suit the M3 or single vanos type?

im thinkn the pins could just be relocated as the harness plug obviously fits ect...

Yes you can change your loom to match the M50 vanos pinout.  From memory it is quite significant difference, 20-30 pins are in different positions and the terminals are a complete ball ache to remove from those connectors.  Not too bad once you have got the first one out and figured out how they work but not easy.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just to check back in.

Ive decided to change the engine harness, in doing this I used I used a m50tub25 harness, I needed a few things to complete the change over.

first of all, harness obviously.

60 teeth trigger wheel (58 teeth,2 blanks for trigger)

m50tub25 cam with Hall trigger.

New hall cam sensor m50tu  (don’t be cheap oem)

new crank sensor for security.

also m50tu air temp sensor to make perfect. I’ll be fitting only what’s on this list, then I’ll report back!
