  1. In the software read these to pages which cover possible comm problems.

Help -> Contents -> Vi-Pec Tuning Software VX Tuning Software manual -> FIFO Setting

Help -> Contents -> Vi-Pec Tuning Software VX Tuning Software manual -> Solving Communication Problems

  2. The ECU does not need to have power to check the USB is found. It is like all USB devices it will be recognized without power being on.

I missed the bit about connecting the harness again and turning on the ignition before you try to go online again.

  3. I recommend you not select the com port number and set it to Auto.

I would unplug the ECU from the harness and the USB cable from the PC. Then shut down the Vipec software.

Plug in the USB cable and look at the device manager and see of the Vipec driver is listed.

Run software again and press F3 to go online.

I would also disable the AutoConnect for the communications.

  4. Run the cam angle test. You will find this under VVT Control -> VVT Setup.

Set the Cam Angle Test to Inlet/LH and the Test pulse count to 4.

Run the engine and press the R key to open the runtime window.

Select the VVT tab and look at the Absolute VVT Positions.

The lowest value shown is the offset you must use for the Trigger 2 VVT Offset.

  5. The interface module we made is no longer needed for Motec, AIM, RacePak or Race Technology.

The Motec, AIM and Race Technology will require Cable A shown above.

The RacePack needs the Vipec V-Net adapter that is made by RacePak. This adapter should have the correct cable to just plug into the Vipec. This was the way it was, unless they changed this.

  6. I've studied all the online Vi-PEC materials, and have read all I can about speed-density systems in general. My question is this: how realistic is it for a dedicated shade tree mechanic (like myself) to tune the Vi-PEC in speed-density mode to the point where it has decent street manners under a range of weather conditions, and a good safe WOT map under heavy boost?

If you enable the open loop AFR table and setup this table with the correct values for the engine, then tuning the fuel table is quite easy using QuickTune, Mixture table or Math key tuning tools. You would also need a good wideband meter like the NGK AFX connected to the ECU while tuning.

Knowing what values to put in the AFR table is where the experience from tuning many engines comes from. I can give you safe values to put in the table if you do not know what to use.

Ignition table tuning requires a dyno and knock detection headphones, to get the maximum power and to be sure the engine will not knock. You could tune the ignition on the road with knock detection headphones, but may never get the maximum from the engine.

  7. After the mapping is done I can connect the flexifuel sensor and set it up correctly and it will automatically adjust the fueling and ignition without any further mapping?

That is the plan how it will work.

  8. The ignition switch power, turns on a relay that puts battery power on Pin A5 on the ECU. The battery must have more then 7 volts. In other words it must not be flat or the alternator not working. Do not know why that is in the manual it is obvious that the battery and charging system be in good condition.

  9. Try doing the firmware update in a different PC. If you still have problems, then contact Neel at Apex Speed Technology. Either send Neel the V88 or get him to send you a serial communication cable.
