Edmund T
Hi all, Yet another trigger related question for a BMW S52B32 motor with a G4X Fury. This is a stock motor with only a single vanos. We have wired the car with new sensors, using a Reluctor crank sensor (BMW part number 12141726065) and a optical hall M50B25 Camshaft sensor (BMW part 12141726590). We just cranked the motor over and confirm TDC offset and its spot on at -325. As for trigger signals, Trigger 1 looks good with correct polarity but Trigger 2 signal is wierd. Log of crankis attached for reference. Runtime values shows Trigger 1 is good but no signal for Trigger 2. Config of Trigge1 & 2 ; Snapshot of triggers : Any help for Trigger 2 is much appreciated. cranking trigger log 290321.llgx
Adamw
Someone has sold you the wrong cam sensor. That one is a reluctor from the non-vanos M50, not hall. The M50 hall sensor part number looks like 12141740959 or 12141748400 or 12141740383
Edmund T
Thanks Adam, I knew I was missing the obvious. I have configured the cam sensor to a reluctor and wired it accordingly. Trig signal polarity looks correct but it does it line up right? From Runtime values, both TRIG 1 & 2 is reporting a valid status 'Yes' but there is a Trig 1 error counter. cam and crank reluctor TriggerScopeLog.llgx
Adamw
You will need a hall cam sensor. The cam has a long tooth, reluctor sensors only work on short shape teeth. Your tooth is like this: _________| ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅̅̅̅̅̅̅̅̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅|___________ Reluctor only works with teeth like this: ________/\__________̅̅̅̅̅
Edmund T
Thanks Adam for your expert advice. I will source for a Hall affect sensor. I suspect the motor is using the hall affec trigger wheel below. 1.Relcutor trigger wheel.
Adamw
Yes, you can tell from the trigger scope that it has the hall wheel which is why I said it needs the hall sensor. The reluctor will spike high when metal is moving towards it and spikes low when metal moves away from it, so you can see where the tooth starts and stops. The tooth would be the pink line, and that is what your cam signal should look like.
Edmund Turner
Hi Adam, I sourced for an Hall sensor for the camshaft/trigger 2 (part number 12141740383 DE)and rewired it accordingly. I am still using the reluctor for Trigger 1 for cranksignal. With the triggerscope, I can see the square wave from the hall sensor on the cam but the signal is still looks wrong. From runtime values - trigger 1 & 2 are good when cranking but there is still a trigger error count as sooon as I stop cranking. Attached is the tirggerscope log for reference. Adamw
Yep something not happy there. It starts off ok then gets "stuck" high. Have you got the pinout set up like below?
Edmund Turner
Hi Adam, I wired it as such; Pin 1 - 8V(A6), Pin 2 -Trigger 2 +VE (A9) and Pin 3 -Trig 2 -VE - Ground out. Shielding cable is also crimped at ecu end to ground out. Looking into the sensor, Pin 1 on left, Pin2 and Pin 3.
Edmund Turner
Hi Adam, I swapped to another Hall sensor and results are much better as below; From runtime value lists, Trigger 1 & 2 status is 'YES' but there is still trigger error count of 2 everytime I stop cranking. I am not sure why there is a trigger 1 count error still. M3 cam optical and crank reluctor TriggerScopeLog.llgx
Adamw
Trigger looks good now. I would not worry if you only get one or two errors as it stops, as long as it is not counting up when its cranking or running it will be good.
