Turbo 2GR-FE Troubleshooting

Recommended Posts

Hi folks- we've recently made the swap over to the G4X to take advantage of some of the CAN stuff ( for our DCT controller ) and keypad, logger space etc. I had someone convert the g4+ map as best they could to the g4x but im experiencing an odd issue.

The car seems to, at a consistent time ( maybe 10-15s ) go into this weird misfire-esque idle after a really nice idle. It seems to be close to target lambda and I truly just can't figure this out. Plugs ok. Coils ok. And if I were to plug my G4+ back in ( I've sold it but i've been chasing this issue for a bit, can confirm what im about to say ), it idles just fine on the NA tune!

I feel like theres some odd mode or something?

I'm attaching some logs, the map, the old g4+ map and some videos to illustrate the issue I'm having.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm trying to get this thing into a decent state to do a bit of low load rolling to test the shifting of the DCT before going to the dyno.

Thank you!

I tried changing startup decay to 0s, and this did not resolve the issue. You can also observe that in the time before the " bad idle state ", I'm able to blip the throttle just fine.

Videos are here https://drive.google.com/drive/u/1/folders/1L-6KQMy5U9YolVdyxTqBJ6CS6rTGG33-

Some logs are there as well as they exceed the 1MB limit

The 3 main problems I see are:

  1. Fuel temp is reading 200°C.  Change your DI5 active edge to rising will likely fix that.
  2. Your APS sensors arent working when you first start it so E-throttle is in limp mode with a 1800RPM limit, you are hitting that limiter right after start up.
  3. Your VVT is set to enable 10s after startup with the lockouts at only 800rpm and -30°C.  One exhaust cam jumps straight to max retard (-37deg) and one intake advances to about 6 deg.  So that probably fits with your "10-15s".  I would disable it for now to confirm that is your problem, but you will eventually want to set more appropriate lockouts, hydraulic VVT usually doesnt work reliably with cold oil and idle rpm oil pressure level.  More typical lockouts would be 70-80°C and 12-1500RPM.  I suspect you may also have to enable custom PID and drop the base duty some.  But mess with that later once you have it warmed up and running more reasonably.

Dont drive it with the APS problem.

APS is actually a known issue that I forgot to mention. It's from the DCT controller as it needs to turn on with the ECU at the same time. I have the controller on a switch right now so it gets mad if I leave it on ( was just being lazy ) and causes errors. Thank you for noticing that and thank you for the concern :)

I'll try these things today and report back. Thank you!
